TV Trolley Buying Guide for Offices, Schools and Video Conferencing

A TV trolley — also called a mobile TV stand, TV floor stand on wheels or display trolley — is one of the most practical display solutions for offices, schools, training rooms and video conferencing setups. Unlike a wall-mounted screen, a TV trolley can be moved between rooms, repositioned for different audience sizes and stored away when not in use.

But not all TV trolleys are built for the same purpose. A trolley for a school classroom has different requirements from one used in a boardroom video conference setup or a large auditorium. This guide covers every specification you need to evaluate before purchasing.

1. Screen Size Compatibility

The first specification to check is the screen size range the trolley supports. Most trolleys specify a minimum and maximum screen size — for example, 32 to 65 inches or 55 to 110 inches. Using a screen outside this range creates two risks:

  • Too small: The screen may not sit securely in the mount brackets, creating a risk of the screen tipping forward.
  • Too large: The trolley may be too narrow to support the screen's weight distribution, making the entire unit top-heavy and unstable.

Always check the screen size range before purchasing. If you plan to upgrade your screen in the future, choose a trolley with a wider size range to avoid replacing the trolley when you replace the screen.

2. VESA Compatibility

VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) defines the standard hole pattern on the back of flat-panel screens used for mounting. Common VESA patterns include 200×200mm, 400×400mm, 600×400mm and 800×600mm. The trolley's mounting bracket must match your screen's VESA pattern.

Most mid-range TV trolleys support VESA patterns from 200×200mm up to 600×400mm, covering the majority of commercial displays up to 75 inches. For very large screens — 85 inches and above — check that the trolley supports VESA 800×600mm or larger.

The VESA pattern is printed in your screen's manual or on the back of the screen near the mounting holes. Measure the horizontal and vertical distance between the hole centres to confirm.

Every TV trolley has a maximum load rating — the total weight of the screen and any accessories mounted on the trolley. Exceeding this rating risks structural failure of the mount bracket or the trolley frame.

Check your screen's weight in its specifications (not including the stand, which you will not be using). Add the weight of any accessories — a camera bar, codec unit, speakers or equipment shelf — and ensure the total is within the trolley's rated capacity with a comfortable margin.

Commercial displays are heavier than consumer TVs of the same size. A 65-inch commercial display may weigh 35 to 45 kg, while a consumer TV of the same size may weigh 20 to 25 kg. Always use the actual weight of your specific screen, not a general estimate.

4. Height Adjustment

The optimal screen height depends on the viewing environment:

  • Standing presentations: Screen centre at approximately 150 to 160 cm from the floor.
  • Seated audiences in a flat room: Screen centre at approximately 130 to 140 cm from the floor.
  • Video conferencing: Camera at eye level for seated participants — approximately 110 to 120 cm from the floor.

A height-adjustable trolley allows you to optimise the screen position for each use case. Fixed-height trolleys are less flexible but more stable and typically lower cost. If the trolley will be used in multiple environments with different seating arrangements, height adjustment is worth the additional investment.

For video conferencing and collaborative presentations, dual-screen trolleys are increasingly popular. A dual-screen setup typically uses one screen for the remote participants' video feed and a second screen for content sharing — eliminating the need to switch between views during a call.

For video conferencing trolleys, the position of the camera is critical. The camera should be at eye level for seated participants — typically mounted above or below the screen, not at the top of a 65-inch screen which would be far too high for a seated meeting.

Look for trolleys with:

  • A dedicated camera shelf or bar at the correct height for seated eye level
  • Cable management channels to route the camera USB or HDMI cable neatly to the codec or laptop
  • An equipment shelf for the video conferencing codec, mini PC or laptop
  • A power strip or cable management tray for the codec, screen and camera power cables

7. Wheel Locks and Stability

All TV trolleys should have lockable castors — wheels that can be locked in position to prevent the trolley from moving during use. Check:

  • Number of locking castors: At minimum, two of the four castors should lock. For heavy screens or uneven floors, all four locking castors are preferable.
  • Castor quality: Cheap castors develop play over time, causing the trolley to wobble. Look for precision-engineered castors with a smooth swivel action and a positive lock mechanism.
  • Castor diameter: Larger diameter castors (75mm and above) roll more easily over floor transitions — door thresholds, carpet edges and cable covers — than small castors.
  • Floor protection: Rubber-tyred castors protect hard floors from scratching. Polyurethane castors are suitable for both hard floors and carpet.

A TV trolley with poor cable management creates a tangle of HDMI, power and USB cables that is both unsightly and a trip hazard. Look for:

  • Vertical cable channels or clips along the trolley column to route cables from the screen down to the equipment shelf
  • A cable entry point at the base of the column to route cables to the power strip
  • Sufficient cable slack management so cables do not strain connectors when the screen is tilted or the trolley is moved

For screens 75 inches and above — used in auditoriums, large training rooms and events — a heavy-duty dual-pillar trolley is required. Single-pillar trolleys are not stable enough for screens of this size and weight.
