RFID Technology Basics for Buyers
UHF RFID — The Standard for Inventory Cabinets
RIFE inventory cabinets use UHF RFID operating at 865–867 MHz (India standard), EPC Gen 2 protocol. Passive tags require no battery — they are powered by the reader's radio field when within the read zone.
Controlled Read Zones — Not Universal Ranges
In RIFE inventory cabinets, the read zone is engineered and controlled — antennas and readers are configured specifically for the cabinet interior to detect items inside and minimise reads of items outside it. The effective read zone is a design parameter of each cabinet, not a universal specification.
Metal Assets and On-Metal Tags
Standard RFID tags perform poorly when attached directly to metal surfaces. Tools, instruments and metal equipment require on-metal RFID tags — specifically designed with a spacer layer that allows the tag to function on metallic substrates. RIFE can advise on appropriate tag selection for metal asset applications.
Metal-Dense and Liquid Environments
Environments with high metal density or items containing liquids can affect RFID read performance. These environments may require specialised tags, adjusted antenna placement, or site testing before deployment. RIFE recommends a site assessment for complex environments.
HF / NFC — Access Control, Not Inventory
Some RIFE cabinets support HF/NFC-based access cards (Mifare, HID) for user authentication. This is a separate function from UHF RFID inventory tracking — the access card identifies the user; the UHF RFID system identifies the inventory items.
Passive Tags — No Battery Required
RIFE UHF RFID inventory configurations described in this guide use passive tags. Tags have no battery and no maintenance requirement. Tag lifespan is determined by the physical durability of the tag substrate and adhesive, not by battery life.

The user takes what they need or returns previously issued items. No scanning required.
Cabinet door closes — RFID reads inventory automatically
RFID readers detect which tagged items are present. The system compares against the previous state to determine what was removed or returned.
