USB-C Power Delivery Explained for Charging Carts and Cabinets

USB-C has become a common connection for phones, tablets and laptops. However, the presence of a USB-C connector does not automatically mean that every charger, cable and device will operate at the same speed. Organisations purchasing a USB-C charging cart or cabinet should understand three things: Power Delivery, wattage and device compatibility.

What Is USB-C?

USB-C refers primarily to the physical connector shape. It is reversible, compact, suitable for power and data, and used across many device categories. Two cables may look identical while supporting different charging power, data speeds, video capability and communication standards. Therefore, appearance alone does not confirm performance.

What Is USB-C Power Delivery?

USB Power Delivery — often called USB-PD — is a charging standard that allows compatible devices and chargers to negotiate the required power level. For example, a phone may request less power than a laptop. The charger and device communicate and agree on an appropriate charging profile. This supports more flexible charging across different devices in the same cabinet.

Why Wattage Matters

Wattage represents the rate at which electrical power is delivered. A small mobile phone may charge effectively at a relatively low wattage. A performance laptop may require much more. Common device requirements include 18W, 30W, 45W, 65W, 90W and 100W or more — depending on the device model.

A 30W USB-C port may connect to a 65W laptop, but it may charge slowly, charge only when the laptop is sleeping, fail to maintain the battery during heavy use, or display a low-power warning. Confirming wattage per port before purchase is essential.
